Glen's Photography

I've long had an interest in photography. My father (also a photographer) gave me my first SLR when I was about 10. It didn't have a light meter, so I had to guess the settings, but I loved the process all the same. There was nothing great about my early photography! I was totally focussed on the subject matter, and had no understanding of composition at all. That's been something I've learned the long hard way, particularly by working with other great photographers. Perhaps if I'd studied fine arts I could have saved myself some time, but then I wouldn't have done all the other fun stuff!

I have a Diploma of Art & Design (majoring in photography) and enjoy the balance of skill, luck, technical know-how, and creativity required to capture images.

Equipment

It was inevitable, and I held off for quite a while, but in September 2006 I sold all my 35mm film gear and changed over to digital. For the sake of keeping several of my lenses, I stayed with Nikon and my current equipment includes a D200 body with 12-24mm f4, 18-200mm f3.5-5.6, 80-200mm f2.8, and 105mm f2.8 macro lenses. I also make regular use of extension tubes, two times converters, and a bunch of flash gear. On light & fast trips I carry a Canon G11 point & shoot, and for my Medium Format work I use a Rollei SL66 with an 80 2.8 lens.

I shoot RAW files which are archived like transparencies, and I use Adobe Lightroom to process them. For storage, I carry many Compact Flash cards (up to 8GB). These are then backed up to a Hyperdrive 160GB battery powered hard drive with build in data verification and a simple file browser.

Of course, the benefits of digital (like reviewing shots on the go, culling surplus shots at the end of the day, etc.) only work if you have plenty of power, and the D200’s AUD$115 batteries certainly won’t give you more than a day or two of busy tinkering. So to get these benefits away from the comfort (and electricity) of home I’ve invested in a 12V charger and a 10W foldable solar panel.

Have a look in the galleries to see images you can purchase. I do plenty of commissioned work too, so if you need an extraordinary photographer, get in touch.
